Gurkemeje kendes nok af de fleste, for at give kogte ris en smuk gul farve, når de koges sammen med gurkemeje. Gurkemeje er medlem af ingefærfamilien og er hovedingrediensen i karry. Gurkemeje indeholder curcumin, som er det pigment, der giver gurkemeje den flotte, gule farve. Ofte kaldes gurkemeje også ”indisk safran”, da dets gul-orange farve er ligesom farven på safran og ofte kan man erstatte safran med gurkemeje, hvis det blot er for at få den smukke farve i retten.
I Kina og Indien har gurkemeje altid været en del af folkemedicinen pga. gurkemejens antiinflammatoriske egenskaber, samtidigt med at gurkemejen kan virke smertestillende.
